Can You Get Health Coverage Outside Open Enrollment?

July 15, 2026•3 min read

A lot of people believe that if you miss Open Enrollment, you're simply out of luck until next year. It's one of the most common misconceptions I run into. And it stops people from getting coverage they actually qualify for right now.

Here's the good news: yes, in many cases, you can get health coverage outside of Open Enrollment. You just need to know which door to walk through.

The Two Paths to Coverage Outside Open Enrollment

1. A Special Enrollment Period (SEP)

If you've experienced a Qualifying Life Event, you may be eligible for a Special Enrollment Period. This is a window (typically 60 days from the event) that lets you enroll in a Marketplace plan just as if it were Open Enrollment.

Common qualifying events include:

  • Losing job-based health coverage

  • Aging off a parent's plan at 26

  • Getting married or divorced

  • Having a baby or adopting a child

  • Losing Medicaid or CHIP eligibility

  • Moving to a new state or coverage area

  • A significant change in household income

If any of these have happened to you recently, there's a strong chance you already qualify. You just need to act within the window before it closes.

2. Private and Year-Round Plan Options

Even without a qualifying life event, you're not necessarily locked out. There are private insurance options available for enrollment any time of year, outside the Marketplace's Open Enrollment restrictions. These plans work differently than Marketplace coverage, so it's worth understanding exactly what you're getting, and what you're not, before enrolling.

This is where a lot of people get into trouble: they find a plan online that says 'enroll today,' assume it's equivalent to full Marketplace coverage, and later discover it doesn't cover what they expected. That's exactly the kind of decision worth walking through with someone first, not after.

Why This Matters More Than People Realize

Missing Open Enrollment doesn't mean you have to go without coverage for months. But it does mean you need to know:

  • Whether you actually qualify for an SEP

  • How much time you have left in that window

  • What documentation you'll need to prove your qualifying event

  • Whether a private plan is a smart bridge option or a poor substitute for your situation

Getting these details wrong can mean paying for coverage that doesn't protect you the way you think it does, or missing your window entirely and being stuck without options until the next Open Enrollment period rolls around.

How to Find Out If You Qualify

If you're not sure whether your situation counts as a qualifying life event, don't guess, and don't assume you're out of luck just because the calendar says it's not Open Enrollment. The rules are more flexible than most people realize, but they're also time-sensitive.

The fastest way to know where you stand is to talk it through with someone who can look at your specific situation and tell you honestly whether you have options and what they are.
